Lifestyle tips

  • Aim for 30 minutes of moderately intensive exercise each day. This can include walking, running, dancing, golf, tennis or netball.
  • Avoid excessive levels of protein foods such as meat and cheese, although you still need some protein every day.
  • Choose fluids for great bone health – water is always a great choice, but latte or cappuccino with skimmed milk (ask for skinny) can help to boost calcium intakes without too many calories; or drink tea with milk. Fizzy drinks and alcohol can reduce the amount of calcium your bones can absorb.
  • Eat a diet rich in calcium (see the information on calcium) If you smoke – stop (ask your pharmacist or practice nurse for help with giving up).
  • Vitamin D stores can be stocked up by getting 15 minutes of sunshine during the summer months, two or three times a week.
  • Avoid high salt foods and don’t add salt to your cooking or at the table.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
