The Menopause

The menopause occurs as a natural part of the female life cycle, usually between the ages of 45-55 years, signalling an end to the fertile years. Production of the hormone oestrogen gradually declines and the body begins to change from a life influenced by oestrogen and the menstrual cycle. This decline results in menopausal symptoms, which may last from anything from a few months to several years.

The symptoms of the menopause differ; some will experience more physical symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats and insomnia, others more psychological effects, such as mood swings, irritability and memory loss. Oestrogen promotes bone density, and helps to protect the heart and blood vessels against disease. As levels decline, the risk of developing osteoporosis and heart disease also increases.

To ease the symptoms of the menopause why not try the following:

  • Avoid things that can trigger hot flushes such as alcohol, caffeine and spicy foods.
  • Sleep in a cool room.
  • Learn to relax and develop effective ways of dealing with stress (meditation, massage etc.).
  • Take regular exercise of moderate intensity.
  • Maintain or take steps to achieve a healthy body weight.
  • Have your blood pressure checked regularly.
  • If you have diabetes, ensure that your blood sugar is well controlled.
